ABOUT ME

Alaka Ravi is an artist and educator based in India.

Her artistic practice is primarily rooted in painting and explores motifs emanating from self and surroundings. She is particularly drawn to ideas about existence and mortality in terms of bodies, objects and spaces as separate as well as simultaneous categories. Art styles such as caricature and comic making also inform the language of her work.

She is currently working on a graphic project exploring grief through slow yet significant passing of time.

Alaka studied English Literature for her undergraduate degree from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi and has a Master’s in English Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her MPhil dissertation titled Sketching Dissent into Democracy offers a study of OV Vijayan’s political cartoons from the Emergency era in India. She has also worked as an Assistant Professor at University of Delhi teaching courses on World Literatures, Popular Literature, Indian Classical Literature and Literature of the Indian Diaspora among others.

She co-founded Alphabets in 2010 for the uplift of underprivileged sections of society.
